Fruit And Veggie Fest!! (10:00 am - 6:00 pm)
The Network for a Healthy California and Grocers Statewide Help Shoppers Get Healthy
WHAT: Each May the Network for a Healthy California (Network), and its grocery store partners statewide, hold Fruit and Veggie Fest events to encourage shoppers to fill their carts with the best healthy foods for their families and to learn healthy habits like filling half of every plate with fruits and vegetables. During the free events shoppers can take advantage of special promotions on fruits and vegetables, talk with nutrition experts and go on store tours to learn about the healthy choices in every aisle.
In Salinas, La Princesa Market has partnered with the Network for more than a decade to make their shoppers’ health a top priority by providing healthy cooking demonstrations and giving away Network educational materials.
WHEN: Fruit and Veggie Fest Salinas -- Saturday, May 18th from 10:00am to 6:00pm
WHERE: La Princesa Market, 614 Williams Road, Salinas, CA 93905
California’s grocers are on the frontlines of the obesity epidemic, which is why the Network works with more than 700 stores to help shoppers put healthy food in their carts and on their tables. Activities like Fruit and Veggie Fest are critical in the battle against obesity, particularly among low-income Californians who are at greater risk. Surveys show that retail promotions can have a positive impact on how shoppers spend their food dollars and CalFresh benefits.
- Local Champion Moms who will share tips and ideas to help shoppers learn about healthy and affordable food options
- Sample delicious nutritious recipes featuring in-season fruits and vegetables
- Sample tasty smoothies from smoothie bike

Family Fun Day (12:00 - noon - 4:00 pm)
This FREE community event will celebrate youth and family members impacted by mental health challenges in Monterey County.
WHAT: Remarks and release of bubbles as a symbol of hope and support for the mental health of children, youth and adults at Monterey County Behavioral Health Bureau’s Family Fun Day! Click HERE for event flyers.
WHERE: Natividad Creek Park, Salinas (Gazebo area)
WHEN: Sunday, May 19, 2013 from 12pm to 4pm with release of bubbles at 1.30 PM
WHY: In the United States 1 in 5 children and adolescents experience mental health challenges, but many do not receive the services they need because of stigma in the community. This free community event seeks to reduce stigma and raise awareness that mental health is part of a person’s overall health and well-being. In Monterey County, many county and community-based organizations are working together to meet the needs of children and youth with serious mental health needs, and their families. Outcomes are showing that as a result children have fewer arrests, better grades and school attendance and improve their functioning and well-being.

Suicide is a serious public health problem that affects individuals in various life stages. For youth between the ages of 10 and 24, suicide is the third leading cause of death. It results in approximately 4,600 lives lost each year.1
Suicides and suicide-related behaviors have a profound toll on American Indian and Alaska Native individuals and communities, particularly among their youth. The suicide rate among American Indian/Alaska Native adolescents and young adults ages 15 to 34 (31 per 100,000) is 2.5 times higher than the national average for that age group (12.2 per 100,000).2
Join us on Thursday, May 23, at 12:00 PM EDT as we highlight how one Tribe has been successful in using data to drive decisions and interventions for addressing youth suicide. This 45-minute Webinar will be led by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Deputy Assistant Secretary for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Dr. Don Wright, and will include a roundtable discussion on the impact of this critical Leading Health Indicator topic.
