Syringe Exchange Program
This annual Syringe Exchange Program Report is directed at the following parties: the Board of Supervisors, law enforcement, administrators of alcohol and drug treatment programs, member of the community and other key stakeholders. The purpose of this report is to provide the aforementioned audience with information on the current status of syringe exchange in Monterey County. Syringe exchange activities continue to be a much needed intervention to reduce transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and other bloodborne pathogens. The current subcontractor, Central Coast HIV/AIDS Services (CCHAS), is implementing models that are used statewide and in many other areas of the country. These models have proved, through multiple outcome evaluations, to decrease the spread of HIV and HCV infection while not increasing or encouraging drug use.
