The Monterey County Health Officer occasionally issues official Health Alerts, Advisories and Updates that let clinicians and other medical professionals know about important public health issues, including communicable disease outbreaks, immunization updates, and emerging infectious diseases.
- HealthAlert: Warrants immediate action or attention.
- Health Advisory: Provides information for a specific incident or situation; may not require immediate action.
- Health Update: Provides updated information regarding an incident or situation; unlikely to require immediate action
Recently, a number of previously healthy individuals developed acute hepatitis and sudden liver failure of unknown cause after using a dietary supplement for weight loss or muscle building. CDC recommends increased vigilance by public health agencies, emergency departments, and healthcare providers.
The Health Department has received 7 reports of new pertussis cases in July so far, indicating a local increase in pertussis activity. Most of the affected individuals were adolescents; however, one case was among an infant less than 3 months of age.
First case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus infection in the US, identified in a traveler, was reported to CDC by the Indiana State Dept of Health on May 1, 2014,confirmed by CDC May 2. The patient is in a hospital in Indiana after having flown from Saudi Arabia to Chicago via London.
