    *Bring your own bag

    Are you prepared to bring your own bag (BYOB)?  Starting this Friday, March 27th single use plastic bags will no longer be available at the places you shop in unincorporated Monterey County. 

    To help shoppers prepare to BYOB, the Monterey County Health Department’s Environmental Health Bureau in partnership with Waste Management, The Offset Project and Save Our Shores has been giving out reusable bags at various locations throughout the county.

    Howie  or Phoebe just might be just your perfect match!  Howie is a red and white Beagle and Queensland Heeler.  Phoebe is a white and tricolor Bull Terrier mix.  
    Visit the Monterey County Animal Shelter at 160 Hitchcock Road in Salinas, meet Phoebe, Howie and the other animals.  Shelter hours Noon to 5:30 pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

    The first survey of sugary drink consumption in Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz Counties

    Obesity is a public health crisis in California and the Central Coast is not immune. In Monterey and Santa Cruz counties, 57 percent of adults and teens are overweight or obese; in San Benito County, the number is even more alarming at 70 percent.

    What is fueling this epidemic? Americans consume about 250-300 more calories daily than they did several decades ago and nearly half of this increase reflects greater consumption of sugar sweetened beverages.

Four companies have issued product recalls for packaged food items containing spinach that may contain the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.   There have been no reports of illness associated with the recalled products.
